Hiring Tips Every Salon Owner Needs to Hear
Let’s be honest, hiring in today’s salon world isn’t easy. You’re not just looking for someone who can balayage like a boss… you’re looking for someone who fits your culture, values, and long-term vision. But it is no longer 2006. Stylists' wants and needs have changed. Today's stylists are looking for more: alignment, values, leadership, and growth opportunity.
In the early days of owning my salon, I was in the trenches—overworked, understaffed, and wondering “why can’t I find the right people?” The truth?
It starts before you even post the job ad.
Here are a few hiring tips that changed the game for me (and can for you too)
1. Get Clear on Who You Are
If you’re unclear on your culture, values, and leadership style, you may find yourself running in circles to find the right fit.
Stylists today are asking:
- What’s the vibe of this salon?
- Is education at the forefront?
- Is there a path for me to grow?
- Is this a culture I see myself being a part of?
- Is there flexibility?
You’ve got to know who you are as a leader and what kind of team you’re building—and that has to show up in everything from your job posting to your first interview.
2. Hiring Starts Before You Post the Job
Truth bomb: your Instagram, website, and salon reputation are doing the hiring before you get them in for the interview.
Is your online presence showcasing your team?
Are you sharing your salon culture and education opportunities?
Does your brand feel like a place people want to be part of?
Stylists are watching—and the ones who align will be drawn in when they see a space they feel they can be a part of and grow in.
3. Take it Slow
I always say… The worst time to hire someone is when you need them! You should always be on the lookout for great talent.
I used to hire in a hurry too. Why? Because I needed help yesterday and I was hiring when I needed someone.
But here’s the truth: quick hires usually lead to quick exits.
I highly suggest slowing it down and being intentional. The hiring/interview process I coach takes 30 days.
But let’s take it back a bit. Before you bring anyone into your space, you need to have a few key things in place:
- A clear growth plan (so they know how they’ll evolve)
- A transparent compensation structure (so there’s no guessing or confusion)
- Solid systems and standards (so they feel supported from day one)
Hiring without these is like inviting someone into a house that’s half-built. It’s uncomfortable, unclear, and nobody stays long.
4. Lead with Vision, Not Just Perks
Yes—pay, schedule, and flexibility matter. But stylists want more than a paycheck. They want purpose and a clear vision they can believe in.
What’s your mission as a salon?
What are your core values? What do you stand for?
How do you lead your team?
What’s the plan for their growth?
If you’re not painting a picture of what’s possible, they’ll find someone who will. Be the leader that listens, inspires, and supports.
